Good posture is about more than looking good or avoiding back and neck pain! We have known for a long time that poor posture causes imbalance, stress and widespread chronic pain and disability to our muscular and skeletal system. The health of our internal organs is also affected by our body posture. The fascial system throughout our whole body holds it all together, and is affected by our posture. Imbalances influence the function of all our structures, including nerves and organs. "The fascial system: is the richest sensory organ, distributes strain, gives you shape, holds compensations..." |

The 42 Pound Head! "Every inch of forward head posture can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” Kapandji, Physiology of Joints, Vol 3. ![]() That means every inch of forward head position adds the weight of another head on your spine! It can cause your body to buckle and deviate from ideal functional alignment.
The consequences to your body systems can be profound; back, neck and joint pain, chronic headaches, numbness in legs and arms, myofascial pain, as well as symptoms that seem unrelated to our posture. Click the link to Erik Dalton's article "The 42 Pound Head"

This provides a center of gravity around the spine to bear the weight of our body with the least amount of stress. In this alignment, the body is balanced. Anterior and posterior muscles alternate in the load bearing and have a chance to rest. Muscle strain is minimized. The body adjusts by bending into unhealthy positions, but it can cause long term damage. As posture declines, the body loses the battle to stay upright. A cane and then a walker is required to stay mobile as the center of gravity moves forward. |
